A large-scale search and rescue operation is underway in the Maldives for veteran Indian rally driver Hari Singh, who has been reported missing after a speedboat capsized on Thursday night. The incident also involved prominent industrialist Gautam Singhania, Chairman and Managing Director of the Raymond Group, who sustained minor injuries.

Intensive Search and Rescue Operations Underway

The Maldives National Defence Force has confirmed that search and rescue operations are actively ongoing for two Indian nationals. These efforts have been intensive, spanning two full days with the deployment of multiple boats, drones, and divers.

As of the latest reports, an extensive area of 3,450 square nautical miles has been surveyed by sea, and an additional 7,000 square meters have been meticulously examined underwater. The search continues today, utilizing sea, air, and dive teams to locate the missing individuals.

Details of the Speedboat Incident

Local reports indicate that seven people were on board the speedboat when it capsized. The exact cause of the incident is still under investigation.

Gautam Singhania, who was among those on the boat, suffered minor injuries. A spokesperson for Singhania confirmed his condition and stated that he has returned to Mumbai to recover from the accident.

Who is Hari Singh?

The search is particularly focused on locating Hari Singh, an iconic figure in Indian motorsport. Fondly referred to as ‘The Flying Sikh’, Singh is a celebrated rally driver with an illustrious career.

His achievements in the Indian National Rally Championship are remarkable; he secured the title five times during the 1990s. Further cementing his legacy, he also won the inaugural Asia Zone Rally Championship.

Beyond his national and zonal successes, Singh has represented India in numerous international rallying events. His expertise extended beyond competitive driving, as he was appointed Head of Operations for JK Tyre Motorsport.

In addition to his roles in rallying, Singh has also shared his extensive knowledge as a chief instructor for Mercedes-Benz India, contributing significantly to motorsport development and driver training in the country.
