Alpina is poised to introduce its inaugural models under the BMW umbrella on May 15, 2026. These highly anticipated vehicles are expected to be based on BMW’s established 7 Series sedan and X7 SUV platforms. The official unveiling is slated to take place at the prestigious Concorso d’Eleganza at Villa d’Este in Cernobbio, Italy, an event renowned for showcasing classic, concept, and historically significant automobiles.
Distinct Identity: Alpina’s Path Forward
The forthcoming Alpina models, derived from the 7 Series and X7, will arrive following BMW’s integration of its ‘Neue Klasse’ design language and technological advancements into these core vehicles. Recent leaked images of the facelifted 7 Series have offered a glimpse into its potential aesthetic evolution.
Addressing the powertrain options, particularly given the 7 Series’ availability in both internal combustion engine (ICE) and all-electric (EV) configurations, Joachim Post, BMW Group R&D chief, stated, “We are technology-open.” This suggests a flexible approach to future Alpina offerings, potentially including electrified variants.
Alpina’s Philosophy: Speed, Comfort, and Luxury
Post elaborated on Alpina’s core ethos, emphasizing its unique market position. “Alpina will talk not about sport but speed, comfort and luxury,” he remarked. This underscores the brand’s commitment to maintaining its historical focus on delivering a refined and luxurious driving experience, distinct from the outright performance orientation of BMW’s M division.
The underlying philosophy guiding the design and configuration of these new models will remain consistent with Alpina’s established principles. While the development is being managed internally by Alpina, the brand will operate as an “exclusive standalone brand,” ensuring its distinct attributes are preserved and nurtured.
“Alpina is completely different from a level that other people like from M, which is the performance,” Post clarified, drawing a clear line between the two performance-oriented entities within the BMW Group.
Design Differentiation: Alpina vs. M Division
Oliver Heilmer, BMW M division design head, highlighted that the design language will further solidify the separation between Alpina and the M division. “We wondered in the beginning if there was anything that might overlap, and were looking into the energy based on the past and then looking into the M projects and what they’re standing for – and they are so different in their work.
Alpina, as you know it now, is more like having something mature, whereas M is always purpose-driven in terms of the best performance,” Heilmer explained. This distinction suggests that Alpina’s design will lean towards sophisticated elegance and mature refinement, contrasting with the aggressive, track-focused aesthetics often associated with M models.
BMW has previously indicated that Alpina will continue to emphasize high-quality materials and exceptional craftsmanship, promising a “remarkable portfolio” of bespoke customization options. This focus on personalization and meticulous attention to detail is a cornerstone of the Alpina brand, offering customers unique opportunities to tailor their vehicles to individual preferences.
While specific details regarding the new models remain under wraps, the strategic alignment with BMW following the acquisition points towards an exciting future for the Alpina marque. The integration is expected to leverage BMW’s global resources while allowing Alpina to retain its specialized expertise in creating uniquely luxurious and high-performance vehicles. The upcoming debut at Concorso d’Eleganza will provide the first substantial look at this new era for Alpina, setting the stage for its continued legacy in the automotive world.
