New York City’s iconic taxi fleet, historically defined by robust American sedans and more recently by practical minivans, may soon see a futuristic addition: the Kia PV5 electric van, reimagined as an accessible, wheelchair-friendly vehicle.

A Collaboration for Enhanced Accessibility

Kia, in partnership with BraunAbility, a leader in automotive accessibility solutions, has unveiled a concept of the PV5 WAV (Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle). This collaboration aims to address the growing need for zero-emission transportation options that cater to all passengers, including those using wheelchairs.

The PV5 WAV concept, presented with a distinctive yellow taxi livery at the New York International Auto Show, is specifically designed to meet the requirements of taxi and rideshare services. A key feature is its compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).

Designed for Diverse Needs

While Kia offers a WAV version of the PV5 in other markets with side ramp access, the BraunAbility modification focuses on accommodating motorized wheelchairs. The updated design includes secure tie-downs to ensure a wheelchair is safely fastened during transit. Crucially, the ramp has been repositioned to the rear of the van, enhancing ease of use for both passengers and operators.

Kia has emphasized that the PV5 was conceived from the ground up to be adaptable. This design philosophy was evident in the 2025 PBV Concept showcase, where various configurable rear cargo areas were demonstrated for different commercial applications. The BraunAbility concept now illustrates the practical real-world application of this modular approach for passenger transport.

A Glimpse into the Future of Urban Mobility

The prospect of the PV5 WAV entering New York City’s taxi fleet aligns with the city’s ambitious environmental goals. New York aims for 100% of all rideshare and taxi trips to be conducted in zero-emission vehicles by 2030.

Despite its presence at the auto show and its potential suitability for urban taxi services, the standard Kia PV5 has not yet been officially confirmed for the U.S. market. While test vehicles have been spotted on American roads, official sales plans remain unclear.

Proof of Concept with Production Potential

Kia and BraunAbility are presenting the PV5 WAV as a proof of concept. However, they have indicated plans for real-world validation of the vehicle in New York City. The companies described the PV5 WAV as “production-ready,” suggesting a strong potential for future commercial deployment.

Sangdae Kim, head of Kia’s PBV (Purpose Built Vehicle) division, expressed enthusiasm for the collaboration. “I can think of no better place to unveil our production-ready concept than one of the most iconic taxi markets in the world,” Kim stated. “Kia is looking forward to continually collaborating with BraunAbility on the PV5 WAV to offer sustainable mobility to more users.”

While the vehicle shown is a concept, its “production-ready” status and the planned real-world testing suggest that a fully electric, accessible taxi option based on the Kia PV5 could become a reality on city streets sooner than anticipated.
