The spirit of women in motorsport and a powerful message for road safety converged as the JK Tyre-WIAA Women’s Car Rally to the Valley commenced its 2026 edition. Flagged off on March 28 from the bustling National Sports Club of India (NSCI) in Mumbai, the event saw over 200 enthusiastic participants embark on a journey that blended competition with a significant social cause.

A Testament to Women’s Empowerment and Road Safety

Organised by the esteemed Western India Automobile Association (WIAA), the annual Women’s Car Rally to the Valley has, over the years, transcended its identity as a mere motorsport competition. It has powerfully evolved into a significant platform dedicated to celebrating womanhood and highlighting the critical importance of women’s safety on public roads.

This year’s rally underscored this dual purpose. Participants adorned their vehicles with creative decorations, focusing on a diverse range of themes. These included powerful messages of women’s empowerment, awareness campaigns for cancer, and advocacy for gender equality, among other vital social issues. The visual display served as a moving billboard for these causes as the cars navigated their course.

The Precision of Time-Speed-Distance (TSD) Format

The rally adhered to a Time-Speed-Distance (TSD) format, a discipline that emphasizes precision, consistency, and effective teamwork over raw speed. This approach ensures that the competition is a test of strategic planning and accurate execution rather than a high-octane race.

In a TSD rally, participants are given a set of target times to reach specific checkpoints over a defined route. Their goal is to arrive as close to these target times as possible. Penalties are incurred for arriving too early or too late, making meticulous planning and consistent driving paramount.

This format requires a deep understanding of navigation and pacing. Unlike conventional races where speed is the primary factor, TSD rallies reward participants for their ability to maintain a steady pace and adhere strictly to the planned schedule.

Navigating the Course Without Digital Aids

The challenging 125-kilometer route took participants from NSCI in Mumbai towards the scenic Novotel Imagicaa hotel in Khopoli. A key aspect of the challenge was the prohibition of GPS devices. Competitors relied entirely on traditional rally-style roadbooks to navigate the course.

These roadbooks provide detailed instructions, including the direction of travel, distances between turns, and speed limits for different sections of the route. Successfully deciphering and following these instructions demands sharp concentration and excellent navigational skills.

The journey through the evolving terrain outside Mumbai, including its characteristic hilly stretches, tested the participants’ ability to interpret the roadbooks accurately and translate them into precise driving actions. It was a comprehensive evaluation of strategy, precision, and driving prowess, showcasing the skills required in classic rally formats.

Triumphant Finishers Emerge

After a closely contested event, Riddhi Tanna and Rajvi Parikh, piloting car number 16, were declared the overall winners of the 2026 JK Tyre-WIAA Women’s Car Rally to the Valley. Their consistent performance and strategic execution throughout the TSD challenge earned them the top honours.

Securing the second position was car number 5, driven by Mallika Rai, Neha Khandelwal, and Gunjan Singh. Their commendable effort placed them firmly in the runner-up position.

Rounding out the podium, car number 32, navigated by Anagha Purohit and Mridula Deshpande, claimed the third spot, showcasing their skill and determination in the demanding rally.

A Vision for Motorsport and Social Change

Srinivasu Allaphan, director – sales and marketing at JK Tyre & Industries, expressed his satisfaction with the event’s success and its broader implications. He highlighted the company’s long-standing commitment to fostering women’s involvement in the motorsport sector.

“For over a decade, we have been committed to encouraging women’s participation in motorsport, and the JK Tyre-WIAA Women’s Car Rally to Valley stands as a testament to that vision,” Allaphan stated. He emphasized that the rally has evolved into a “marquee event,” successfully merging the thrill of motorsport with the advocacy for critical social causes.

Allaphan further commented on the positive reception and participation. “We are encouraged by the strong enthusiasm of the participants as we continue to build greater awareness around road safety,” he added, underscoring the event’s ongoing mission to promote safer driving practices and enhance awareness among all road users.
